Xavier le Roy
Choreolab November 23- 26, 2009
Chunky Move is delighted to announce that French born dancer and choreographer Xavier Le Roy will be our guest Choreolab artist this November.
Xavier Le Roy’s works are experimental. His performances are experiments with the spectators. He is not only concerned with how the body is represented but also how this representation was arrived at. It is this relationship between the product and the making that yields a rich insight into methods, ethics and politics of the process of dance and theatre. This has distinguished him as a seminal influence over the last decade.
In producing much of his work, Xavier employs methods and procedures that appear utopic in design. This is not necessarily to arrive at an ideal state, but rather a way to question the processes in which we create so as to offer new alternatives. Xavier also uses game and play to create methods of composition while engaging in a performance situation. Structures and rules of games enable his works to separate bundled questions on performance while existing in the realm of both imaginary and concrete performance situations.
Chunky Move’s Choreolab initiative offers Australian dancers, choreographers and performance makers (tertiary qualified or equivalent) the opportunity to develop their skills and gain insights into choreographic practice from notable international dance practitioners. This four-day workshop with Xavier Le Roy would most suit choreographers, directors and performance makers with specific interests in the methodology of creating their work and its relationship to the audience.
Choreolab is a free program, however numbers are limited and there is a brief application process.
Please contact Prue Beal , Office and Marketing Coordinator at prue@chunkymove.com.au or (03) 9645 5188 to request an application form (or download an application form below)

About Xavier le Roy:
Before devoting himself to dance, Xavier Le Roy worked as a researcher on molecular and cellular biology. Dancing and choreographing since 1991, his pursuit for the study of the human body translated in seemingly simple but highly sophisticated dance performances. From 1997 to 2003 he was artist in residence at the Podewil, Berlin. In 2007/08 he was associate artist at the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier (CCNM) where together with Bojana Cvéjic he has initiated the project 6M1L (6Month1Location), inviting 9 artists working in different research projects and performance productions as well as other types of events linked to all activities of the CCNM.
