How and when did Chunky Move get started?

Chunky Move originally began as a one-off project of two works in 1995;
Spectre in the Covert Memory choreographed by Garry Stewart (now Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre) and Gideon Obarzanek’s Fast Idol were presented as a double-bill for the 1995 Melbourne Festival. Garry and Gideon were both then based in Sydney, and this program was the first ‘Chunky Move’ production. In 1997, Chunky Move won the Victorian Government tender to create the State's major contemporary dance company, and in 1998, the Company relocated to Melbourne.

What kind of training do your dancers have?

Chunky Move employs dancers on a project to project contract basis. Dancers come from a range of backgrounds and training histories. Most however, have undertaken training at secondary and/or tertiary dance schools such as the Victorian College of the Arts School of dance, the Adelaide Institute of TAFE (formally the CPA), the Queensland University of Technology dance course or the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

What kind of training do your dancers undergo during rehearsal periods?

When engaged with the Company, dancers take part each morning in a dance class in contemporary techniques, ballet, yoga, stretch or Pilates and other related disciplines. These classes are taught by some of Victoria’s most experienced dance teachers and are also open to the public.

What happens in a Chunky Move rehearsal?

Chunky Move rehearsal periods are usually focused on two types of activity: 1) creative development of a new work; and 2) rehearsal of existing works.

When the Company is creating a new work (or works), dancers usually take part in task-oriented movement and dramatic development. This means that a choreographer or director will either create movement for the dancer to perform and develop, or the choreographer or director will create stimuli and tasks for the dancer to develop movement.

When re-rehearsing an existing work, dancers will often be relearning movement from a video recording and refreshing choreographic and dramatic intentions with the aid of the Artistic Director and the Company Coordinator. They may also be teaching new cast members some of the roles and understudying each other’s roles.
