Michaela French

Michaela French has a background in Fine Arts and has been working in the area of Film, Television and New Media for the last ten years. She is a graduate of the Canberra Institute of the Arts and the Digital Media Department of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

Michaela has written and directed a number of short films, ranging from drama and documentary to digital animation and video installation. Her award winning film Flux has screened extensively at both national and international film festivals and new media events.

The challenge of creating film and motion graphics for a range of projection spaces has been pivotal to Michaela’s recent work, which has included productions at the Melbourne Planetarium; the Australian Pavilion, Expo 2000, Hanover, Germany; the National Museum of Australia; Opera Australia and the Natural History Museum, Albuquerque, USA. All of these projects have provided Michaela with the opportunity of exploring and expanding the boundaries of screen language in worlds beyond the confines of the conventional cinematic environment.

Michaela worked with Chunky Move for the first time in 2002 on
Wanted: ballet for a contemporary democracy.

Michaela continues with her own creative practise and is currently developing the script for her next short film,
Obituary. The work is an experimental narrative which will be projected in an immersive multi-screen installation environment. The film deals with themes of relative scale, temporality and completion.
