Michael Kantor

Michael Kantor studied at the University of Melbourne (1986-90) and in Paris at the L'Ecole de Phillipe Gaulier (1988). As an actor and director of theatre and opera, he has worked for numerous theatre and opera companies throughout Australia.

His performing roles include:
Notes from Underground, Othello and Titus Andronicus (Gas Theatre) and The Dybbuk, Es Brent, The Operated Jew and Wilderness Room (Gigul Theatre).

Michael worked with Opera Australia as assistant to the director on
The Golem and Nabucco and was both the deviser and director of Excavation: The Last Days of Mankind (1996 Adelaide Festival) and Lenz (1996 Melbourne International Festival) with Mene Mene Theatre. His directing credits also include: The Tower of Babel, Kabaret Krakt and Caligula (Sham Theatre); The Burrow (1994 Festival of Perth and The Song Company), Natural Life (1998 Adelaide Festival and Playbox), Caucasian Chalk Circle and Ham Funeral (Company B Belvoir), Meat Party (Playbox Theatre).
Michael’s recent work includes the highly acclaimed production of
King Ubu for Company B Belvoir and Melbourne International Festival of the Arts and Yue Ling Jie (Moon Spirit Feasting) for Elision Ensemble which performed at the 2000 Telstra Adelaide Festival and 2002 Berlin Festival and will also travel to Paris and Tokyo this year.

Michael is currently the Artistic Director of Mene Mene Theatre, a Melbourne-based company that aims to create visceral and rigorous music theatre works.

Michael’s first project with Chunky Move is
Tense Dave, premiering in late 2003.
