Moira Finucane is widely regarded as Australia's most extraordinary
performance artist, creating unique works powered by intense
and meticulous physicality; exceptional use of music from
early opera to hardcore techno; and her own surreal fantastical
writing.
Critically acclaimed as hypnotic, volcanic, harrowing and
astoundingly beautiful, her idiosyncratic works mine a diverse
spectrum of entertainment genres including burlesque, fairytale,
silent film, cabaret and vaudeville and meld them into thrilling
explorations of gender, power, violence and desire.
Created with director & collaborator Jackie Smith, Finucane's
singular works have been presented in festivals throughout
Australia an in the UK, in major galleries including the National
Gallery of Australia, and in famous and infamous clubs. Her
breathtaking burlesques - only minutes in duration - have
been critically acclaimed throughout Australia and in the
UK.
Finucane and Smith's surreal and site specific theatrical
events have taken audiences into a world of fairy tales and
dark gothic morality. And their unique brand of cabaret has
garnered awards for a work where not a song is sung, earning
Finucane the title of Queen of Cabaret Bizarre.
Recent commissions include a site specific monstrous Dress
Shop for Chunky Move Dance Company's Arcade, and a variety
show of murderous horror for QUN UK's 2000 festival. Forthcoming
works include the second in the cabaret bizarre trilogy -
Gotharama: the Diva of the Damned.
