Wheeler
Adam starting dancing at the age of 18 where he joined Stompin Youth Dance Company under the direction of Jerril Retcher and Trained in Ballet at Launceston Dance Centre (Maryann Peacock) In 2001 Adam was part of a collaboration, Phulcrum Dance Company where they premiered their first work I Don’t Do Mornings.
2002-2004 Adam Trained at the Victorian College of the Arts, working with Choreographers such as Neil Adams, Simon Ellis, Sandra Parker, Rebecca Hilton and Beth Shelton. In his second year Adam choreographed his first Melbourne based work 3 Day Growth as part the 2003 Melbourne fringe Festival and won Most Outstanding Movement Award.
2004 saw Adam Join Victoria’s state contemporary dance company Chunky Move and was part of the original cast of I Want to Dance Better at Parties, winner of 2005 Betty Pounder Award for original choreography, 2005 Green Room Award, Concept and Realisation. Adam has performed with the company across Australia and the United States of America, including the Joyed Theatre and Chicago’s Museum for Contemporary Art. Adam and the company are about to set off on tour back to the USA, Vancouver and New Zealand. Adam not only dances for the company but also teaches choreographic and technique classes for a wide range of year groups and levels.
Adam has a keen interest in working with young people and over the last 4 years has taught and made work in a number of schools across Victoria and Tasmania, Highlights of his work have been choreographing Bone Dry & Green, with Emma Porteus for Stompin as part of the Outback Fringe Festival, The Opening event for Streets Alive youth Arts Festival and being part of the Out There pilot program for the Australian Ballet.
Adam is currently studying at Deakin University in Education, works as a contemporary teacher at Dance World and teaches at various schools across Melbourne. He is hoping to launch a new dance collective, 2ndtoe Dance Collective in the Melbourne Fringe Festival this year.
