Stephen Armstrong

Stephen is currently Program Manager for The Myer Foundation and Sidney Myer Fund.  He is a producer of the feature film The Boy Castaways (dir. Michael Kantor) to premiere in October 2013, and curator and producer of The School of Life Secular Sermon Series.  

He was Executive Producer of Malthouse Theatre from 2004 to 2011.  Previous positions include: Artistic Associate, Sydney Theatre Company; General Manager, Queensland Theatre Company; General Manager, Chamber Made Opera, and; Administrator, Handspan Theatre.  

Stephen is a founding Board Director of Chunky Move and a Trustee of the Victorian Actors’ Benevolent Fund.  He is currently Chair of the Theatre Board of the  Australia Council.  He was previously inaugural Chair of Council’s New Media Arts Fund and a member of the Performing Arts Board.    

An occasional reviewer and arts writer, for a number of years he appeared regularly on ABC TV’s Critical Mass.  He has been a judge for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, the Melbourne Prize for Literature, the Patrick White Playwrights’ Award and the Helpmann Awards.  He has been a Victorian advisory panellist for the Churchill Fellowships since 2008.

A graduate of English Literature and History & Philosophy of Science at Melbourne University, in 2006 he completed the Executive Program for Non-Profit Leaders at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.

Awards include: 1992 Myer Group Arts Award; 1999 George Fairfax Fellowship; 2005 Green Room Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre; and the 2008 Kenneth Myer Medallion for Outstanding Achievement in the Performing Arts.
